What is Arc?

Arc is a new modern browser that can empower people to do more. It has a beautiful user interface and a great experience from the first expression you open the app. Currently, you can get an invitation and use it on macOS.

Who Made it?

The BROWSER COMPANY of NEW YORK — Founded in 2019. Their team aims to overwhelm the existing browser's shortcomings. They've various Engineers and Designers who previously worked for big tech companies, e.g., Tesla, Medium, Amazon, Google, Snap, Slack, and more.

First Impression

Arc has more configuration and customization than other browser apps to make it 'more personal.' Here's a quick walkthrough.

First and most, you can easily import data (e.g., Bookmark, Passwords, etc.) from other browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge).

2. You can pick a color you like for Space — a group of tabs in the vertical navigation bar. And pin favorites shortcuts that always float on top of the Space.

3. Arc also provides "Block Ads" options — it is not a built-in feature and installs the 'uBlock origin" extension instead (As Arc is based on Chromium, it can install all extensions as Chrome does as usual). You may set it as default to replace the original browser. Of course, it is optional, and you should try for a few days first.

Arc will give you a random membership card after setup, but it will not have any meaningful extra features. Just for fun 😹

Layout

There is no top bar. They moved all the tabs to the left side and maximum the readable content. For most users, it takes time to adapt.

I like how they made hints, the archive pop-up animation looks so unique, and the info is clear to understand.

Split Screen

Unlike safari, the split screen is within the Arc app, similar to the split fullscreen experience on macOS.

You can hover the three dots to control the split screen position or archive (close) the window. * The extensions can also be found here but not in the left navigation bar.

Navigation bar (Left Sidebar)

You can swipe left and right to switch between spaces quickly and config each theme color and icon.
